TITANIC SIGNATURE PROJECT PROPOSED FOR ODYSSEY Major plans for a potential new site for the Titanic Signature Project, the key visitor attraction to be built with the support of government for the 2012 Titanic centenary, were revealed today. Known as Titanic Dock, the proposal envisages a new, iconic, boat-shaped extension to the Odyssey at Abercorn Basin. The building would create an additional 120,000 square feet of exhibition and gallery space including a scale model of the Titanic suspended spectacularly behind the glass frontage of the building. The boat-like design would also incorporate rejuvenated exhibition space for W5; a new five star hotel which allows guests to stay ‘on the boat’; a centralised ticketing and commercial area and new banqueting and conference space on the top floors with views of Belfast Lough, Queen’s Island and beyond. Halloween Fireworks Display A spectacular fireworks display was staged at the Odyssey complex on Wednesday 31st October 2007. It attracted an estimated 20,000 people from all over Northern Ireland and was regarded as one of the country’s biggest and most successful family events of the year. Belfast City Council, which ran the event and received sponsorship from Translink Metro, chose the Odyssey venue because it is a high profile complex, easily accessed by road and public transport. As well as fireworks, there was live entertainment provided by Belfast Youth Concert Band and 60 street performers and numerous stalls, selling a variety of goods and refreshments. Business in the Community During November and December 2007, the Trust hosted three cross-community events using their corporate box within the Arena. On 2nd November representatives of the East Belfast Partnership and South Belfast partnership were our special guests at an ice hockey match, featuring the Belfast Giants. Two weeks later, ice hockey again provided the entertainment for members of Falls Road Community Council (west Belfast) and Belfast Eagle Sea Cadets (Greater Shankill). Then on 14th December, the Belfast Eagle Sea Cadets returned as our guests at another ice hockey match. Unfortunately, another group of guests who were invited to join them were unable to do so due to unforeseen circumstances. All three events were held in partnership with Business in the Community. Northern Ireland International Horse Show Reception and Dinner This was the fourth year of staging the Horse Show at Odyssey and to mark the occasion, the Trust hosted a reception and dinner on 24th October 2007 in the Atrium, W5 for 170 specially-invited guests. Compere for the gala evening was Diane Harron. Speakers for the evening included Mr Joe Sloane, President of the Northern Ireland International Horse Show, Mr Alan Gibson, Chairman of the Odyssey Trust and Mr Mervyn Elder, Chairman of the Northern Ireland Events Company. |
