ISSUED ON BEHALF OF THE ODYSSEY TRUST COMPANY

News release 06/03/2008

Odyssey reviews for the future

The Odyssey Trust Company has commissioned a report reviewing the space currently used by its Science Centre at Odyssey, it has been announced today.

The report, from Locum Consulting, a specialist in advising on the optimisation of tourism, leisure and destination space is nearing completion.

Alan Gibson, Chairman of the Odyssey Trust Company said:

“The Odyssey Trust Company has a responsibility to continually find ways to secure the Odyssey’s long-term sustainability and we are very aware of meeting future maintenance and refurbishment costs as the centre approaches its tenth anniversary in 2010. The report explores a number of options for maximising the Odyssey space to ensure that the Northern Ireland public has access to some of the best possible services and amenities available.”

“What we’re doing with this report is examining future ways in which we can maximise the space under our control within the Odyssey. We are confident that we can continue to provide new, fresh and appealing amenities to meet our responsibilities to the public and which also supports our ability to raise revenue so that the Odyssey can be sustained in the years ahead,” he added.

The report is the result of five months of research examining how the Odyssey’s science provision, currently delivered by W5, might operate more effectively in both the medium and long term. As part of the report a comprehensive policy and data review was undertaken including a market analysis covering the resident, tourism and educational markets. A comparator analysis was also undertaken of Science Centres across the UK, Europe and USA along with general Waterfront and entertainment-led destinations in Belfast.

The initial findings of the report are currently being discussed with The Department for Culture Arts and Leisure and the Big Lottery Fund and a decision on the viability of the Odyssey Science Centre will be made at a future date.
